The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in Arizona; considered to be one of the major natural wonders of the world and is located in one of the oldest national parks in the United States. Snaking along its floor are 277 miles of the Colorado River, which has carved the canyon over the past six million years and exposed rocks up to two billion years old-half the age of the Earth. The journey also takes you to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. Lake mead is the largest reservoir in the United States. Formed by water impounded by Hoover Dam, it extends 110 miles behind the dam, holding approximately 28.5 million acre feet of water. The water held in Lake Mead is released to communities in Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada, via aqueducts. Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. When it was completed in 1936, it was both the worlds largest electric-power generating station and the worlds largest concrete structure. As we continue to travel through the Arizona desert, you will learn about the native Indians and early explorers and settlers. After a satisfying lunch, you will trek along paved roads that wind round the rim of the Grand Canyon and be amazed by plunging gorges and the multi-colored rock formations. Our excursion will take you right into the Grand Canyon National Park, stopping at the new state of the art visitors center (offering information on all aspects of the Grand Canyon). You will also visit Mather Point where millions of visitors to the Grand Canyon get their first spectacular, panoramic view of the natural wonder from this lookout. At an elevation of 7,120 feet, this viewpoint overlooks Pipe Creek Canyon and the Inner Gorge of the Colorado River.
